Layered images painted then stitched

Beyond the Fence Series

Over the Sea Series

When I came across an old decaying wooden boat far from any body of water it spoke to me of sea, salt and past adventures. The timber is gnarled and warped, ravaged by time yet there is still beauty evident in its graceful lines, the skill of its construction and its weathered texture. It reminds me that in a similar way our life experiences mark our souls and forge our character.

We exist simultaneously in the present and the eternal and this creates both a tension and a harmony. Where we choose to focus our attention determines what dominates our perception.

The stitched outline of a vessel shows the detail and texture of the ravages of time on timber yet it is transparent and ethereal suggesting impermanence. The seascape over which this image is layered, is solid and present. The transparency of the sketched image hints at the transient nature of our earthly existence whilst the wider seascape invites us to move beyond it and into the possibilities beyond.

I choose to work with textiles having always loved the feel of cloth in my hands and the associated sense of security and comfort it imbues. Painting onto high count cotton then drawing with thread using a domestic sewing machine, I add stitch to fabric to create a subtle dimension and texture which evokes the feel of worn timber.
